Deadly Mistake #3:

Be Careful…Listening to So Called Speaker Coaches Who Aren’t Currently Speaking and Making a Ton of Money at What They’re Claiming They Can Teach You Can Ruin Your Business.

Several years ago, I attended a function in Burbank, CA for speakers, authors, trainers, coaches and consultants. There were approximately 200 of us who were all there to hear three guest speakers talk about ways to generate more publicity.

After the three speakers gave their presentations, they sat together on stage to answer questions.

I immediately raised my hand for permission to approach the crowd microphone so I could ask my question.

After I was called on, I walked to the microphone, stated my name, the fact that I was a speaker and proceeded to ask my question. The three guest speakers were most gracious and answered my question in great detail.

As the function came to an end, I headed toward the exit when I was approached by a woman who asked if I was the “young” speaker who had asked the question. When I told her I was, she proceeded to start a conversation with me.

To summarize the conversation…she suggested that she would be the perfect speaker coach for me.  When I asked her how many speeches she booked, her reply was none!  Zero, no speeches ever…not one!  So I said how are you suppose to teach me about building a motivational speaker business?

Be VERY careful of so called, “speaker coaches.” Most of them have never been successful at getting booked and paid to speak.  Yet, they’ll try to dazzle you with statistical data, fancy charts, eloquent words, and persuasive sales lines.

Bottom line…..personally, I would NEVER give my hard earned money to someone who isn’t extremely successful at what they’re claiming they can teach me.

There’s a big difference between theory and actual, hands-on, real world, battling-in-the-trenches experience.

Remember, actions speak louder than words and if they haven’t done (or even better, if they aren’t currently doing NOW) what they’re telling you they can teach you, yet, they’re trying to convince you to pay them money, then I have only one word for you.

And, you’d better perk your ears up and hear this loud and clear.  Here’s my one word suggestion for you: RUN!

Actually, let me change that to a two-word suggestion:

RUN FAST!

I’m as serious as a heart attack!

Get as far away from these people as you possibly can because they will do nothing more than suck your hard-earned money out of your pockets without putting any money IN your pockets!

I wish someone taught me that back in the beginning of my career when I was listening to these so-called “speaker coaches!”

Looking back, I now realize that choosing to listen to these people was one of the main reasons my career was in a constant downward spiral!

…and, one of the main reasons I was constantly “spinning my wheels,” feeling like a complete failure, ready to give-up and quit.

In your business, your life, sometimes at your company or on your team – you need to clean out the pollution to begin to achieve the results you are capable of.  This is especially true if you are trying to become a motivational speaker, take your speaking business to the next level, or get yourself out of a rut.

Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit!” I couldn’t agree more when it comes to achieving your goals and creating success! There’s an old saying, “Repetition is the mother of skill,” meaning that in order to improve or increase your performance, whether personally, professionally or financially, you must continuously and consistently practice the RIGHT HABITS!

Studies indicate that it takes approximately 21-30 days to create a new habit. This means that if you want to change or create a belief in your mind, it should become a natural habit after practicing it for 21-30 days.

John Dryden said, “We first make our habits and then our habits make us!”

One of the habits I’ve consistently practiced over the last few years that has allowed me to achieve many goals, is reading some-type of self-improvement book at least 60-minutes a day.

One of my strategies I’ve followed for the past several years is very simple, yet extremely powerful. Each January, I create a reading list (schedule) of which ONE book I am going to read each month. HINT: You should be creating a schedule too!

Three rules I follow:

Rule #1: I read 30-minutes every morning as soon as I awake and 30-minutes right before going to bed. These two times are when the subconscious mind is most receptive. Start your day and end your evening by putting positive, success-related information in your mind.

NOTE: Don’t try to give me the excuse that “you’re too busy!” It’s all about creating successful, winning habits! Get up 30-minutes earlier and turn the TV off at night and read a book that will help you to grow personally, professionally, financially or spiritually!  If you are going to become a motivational speaker you need to start with motivating yourself.

Rule #2: When that month is over, I move on to the next month’s book, even if I didn’t finish the book. But, I always finish the book well in advance of the end of the month because I don’t read every word, and you shouldn’t either. Get in the HABIT (there’s that “successful-persons” word again) of skimming the paragraphs and pages only focusing on the main (important) points.

Rule #3: I always read with a pen and hi-liter so I can make notes of the most important ideas.

Remember what Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit!” Get in the HABIT of reading 60-minutes every day. It will change your life!

What you choose to do with your time will impact your business more than anything else. If you are trying to become a motivational speaker and you are not spending time on growing your business everyday…how will you achieve your goal?

What do you do to protect yourself from time wasting traps.

Have you ever been uncomfortable with your business, growth, or when you are challenging yourself to move forward?

It is actually great to be uncomfortable.  You and I as human beings, we won’t move and make a positive change until it becomes uncomfortable.  I will prove it to you.  Think of  yourself sitting on your chair right now at your computer. You are probably pretty comfortable.  It is not until the minute your butt falls asleep, your leg falls asleep, your back gets stiff that you adjust and you move.

It is the minute that you become uncomfortable when you change. True growth and greater accomplishment only happens when you push yourself and stretch yourself outside of your comfort zone.  And when you are uncomfortable, fantastic, because that means there is an opportunity for growth and change.  I have a dear friend and when he pushed himself past his limits…he defeated Evander Holyfield in a title match.  My friend is Michael Moorer.  I knew Michael for 25 years before his fight.  We went to school together.

His goal was to win. He won!  Then an interesting thing happened, the same thing happens to most all of us after we reach a certain point of success – everything thing slowed down.

This is something so easy to have happen in our lives.  The next time he fought he lost to George Foreman.   Michael went on to have a widely successful career.  The question is when you are going for the title, and you reach some level of success, do you stop training like you used to train, stop working out as hard, and get comfortable? I was with him with at the training camps in Palm Springs when he was preparing for George and when he was training for Holyfield.   I saw the difference.  I’ve seen so many people with a passion and action plan to create real results get comfortable and that drive turns to fear.  Before they were hungry, they kept going when they wanted to stop and when things got uncomfortable they pushed past the pain.  Before, being “uncomfortable” was growth for these people.

If a person comes from a poverty mindset, uncomfortable equals fear.  When you position yourself with a prosperity mindset, uncomfortable equals growth.  When you study NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) you and I, human beings, we make decisions and we do things for two reasons and two reasons only…To avoid pain or to gain pleasure.  That is it.  Avoid pain or gain pleasure.

Think about it, if you experience a little discomfort in your life, good!   You have to fight past the pain, the discomfort, the uneasy feelings that come with growth, and stay focused.  You owe it to your future success, rather it is becoming a motivational speaker or anything else, you must push past your comfort zone and fight to win your success.
